Emergency Wallet Card

How are other emergency cards on the market inherently flawed?

There are four basic types of emergency cards available today:

  1. Phone Based Cards typically resemble a credit card and have very little room for actual medical information. First responders are required to call a third party and provide a person’s name or ID number. The third party then has to read back pages of information while the responder writes it down or tries to remember it. Does this seem efficient? What if phone service is interrupted or not available at the emergency site? Who decides what information is the most important to read back first?

  2. Internet Based Cards are similar to the phone based versions except that the medical information is retrieved via a third party website. This means that anyone who sees the card (not just medical personnel) can not only access your data, but also potentially alter it. Does this seem safe? What if the first responder doesn’t have access to a computer or an internet signal? What if the website is temporarily down?

  3. Flash Memory Based (USB) Drives & Cards usually contain not only a person’s medical information, but also the software to update it. Essentially everything the person has paid for is on-board the USB device. What if the USB ever gets damaged, lost, or stolen? What if a computer isn’t available at the emergency site? Did you know that many hospitals and first responders are not allowed to use USB devices because of virus concerns?

  4. Blank Emergency Cards are inexpensive, but rely on someone to “fill in” their own medical information in a limited space. It’s difficult to write this small and even harder for first responders to read hand written information. Did you know that most pen inks will fade or smear quickly due to handling or the humid environment of a wallet or purse? This type of card is the most likely to lead to medical mistakes.

With the On The Road MD Emergency Wallet Card there is no time wasted, all of your vital Medical Information is on hand and available instantly in an easy-to-read and organized format. Laser printing provides the highest quality available and ensures that your information is durable enough to withstand just about any conditions. There are no phone calls to make and no computer is required.

Why do you use different colors on the Emergency Wallet Card?

We have found by using different colors, it becomes much easier to process written information into various categories. Simple black text by itself is fine when you are reading sentences, but when first responders are looking at a Medical Profile they need to be able to locate and process individual bits of information as quickly and accurately as possible. Colored categories help their eyes stayed focused in one area and then move quickly to the next and also reduces the likelihood that they are re-reading information unnecessarily.

What do you mean by unlimited card updates?

Members may order as many updated or duplicate Wallet Cards as they like. Whether you need a new card that reflects updates to your Medical Profile or just want 5 backups, tell us how many cards you need and we will get them to you.

How do I update my Wallet Card?

From the Member Homepage, locate the person's name for whom you would like to order a Wallet Card. Directly right of the name you will see an order card link. Once clicked, type in how many additional cards you would like to order and update the shipping and handling fees to see your total. Continue with checkout when ready.

How much does it cost to order additional or updated Wallet Cards?

$2.95 per card ordered which includes shipping and handling.

Why do you charge a fee for each card ordered?

We do not want to impose limits on the number of cards that can be ordered, but we also have to keep it realistic. Wallet Cards cost money and time to produce and by having a fee for each card ordered, we reduce the likelihood of someone abusing the system by ordering cards unnecessarily.

Medical Profile Software

What types of information are important to include in my profile?

Any information that could potentially save your life if you could not speak for yourself. Our profile building software helps guide you through the process and provides examples.

Is there any information I should not include in my profile?

Information that is outdated or would not be of assistance when being medically treated. Examples would be minor medical events (wisdom teeth, stitches, broken arm, etc). Common sense is key.

Secure Online Vault

What type of information should I put into my Online Vault?

The Online Vault is designed to hold information that could be valuable in a non-medical emergency. One example would be if you were traveling and your wallet was lost or stolen. Within your Online Vault, you could instantly access:

  • Credit card information and contact numbers to have your cards put on hold.
  • Important phone numbers to alert others of your situation.
  • Scanned copies of your driver's license, passport, or other IDs.
  • Insurance information and contact numbers.
  • Legal documents (living will, power of attorney, legal papers, etc).

These are just a few suggestions, the ways that it can benefit you are almost limitless. Remember, you can access your Online Vault 24/7 from anywhere in the world.

How secure is the Online Vault?

The Online Vault is accessible only after a member has logged into their account. This log-in process uses similar 256-bit encryption and password protection almost all banks and credit cards companies use today.

How much information can I store in 6 MB of Vault space?

This is a complicated question due to the many various file and image formats. Text documents take up very little space while images take up much more. A good balance would be 10-15 text documents and 3-4 smaller images. You will be able to store more information by using compression tools such as WinZip or WinRAR.

Medical Alert Labels

Are Medical Alert Labels really important to use?

First responders are trained to look for signs that a person has Medical Information to assist them. The idea is to get your information to them as quickly as possible. Each of the Alert Labels is highly visible and displays the universal “Star of Life” emergency medical symbol. With proper application (instructions are provided), they could help save your life.

Can additional Medical Alert Labels be ordered?

Yes! Our Medical Alert Labels are sold in sets and can be ordered from the Member Homepage or by contacting us at sales@ontheroadmd.com. Price is $3.95 per set ordered which includes shipping and handling.

Why is the refrigerator the best place to store my records?

Refrigerators are almost universally owned and located in the kitchen, making it easy for first responders to get to your information quickly. Refrigerators also provide safe, out-of-the-way storage for your records.

What type of items should I place in the Red Medical Alert Bag?

A copy of your PDF Profile Summary and any additional information that could be valuable in an emergency (living will, hospital preference, and etc).

Medical Fax Service

What exactly is a PDF Profile Summary?

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a safe (read-only) file format. The Profile Summary takes all of your medical information and displays it in an easy to read format. The PDF Profile Summary contains the same medical information as the Emergency Wallet Card; this layout is ideal for faxing.

How else can the Medical Fax Service be used?

PDF Profile summaries can be faxed to a doctor prior to a visit or to emergency contacts giving them your most up-to-date information.

Portable USB Vault

How much does the Portable USB Vault cost? What is the memory size?

Only $19. Current memory size is 1 GB.

How secure is the Portable USB Vault? Is it compatible with a Mac?

The 256-bit encryption and password protection is the same type used by our military and financial institutions. No one will be able to access your private records unless you want them to. The USB Vault is compatible with Windows and Mac based computers, however the private (encrypted) area is not viewable on the Mac.

Do I get to choose my own password?

Yes, each USB Vault ships with a temporary password which should be updated before use. Step-by-step instructions are also provided to help guide you through this easy process.

Can my password be recovered if I forget or lose it?

No, once the temporary password has been changed there is no way of recovering a forgotten or lost password. Please choose a password carefully and backup the information that gets put into your USB Vault. The drive can be restored to its original condition by formatting and re-encrypting. However, all information will be lost.

Why is there an public section on the USB Vault?

The sole purpose of the public section is to display your PDF Profile Summary to first responders. Any additional information should be stored in the private section of the USB Vault.

How do I update my PDF Profile Summary on the USB Vault?

  1. Go to the Member Homepage.
  2. Click on the person's name you would like to update. (PDF Profile Summary will appear)
  3. Insert the USB Vault into your computer.
  4. Save the PDF Profile Summary to the USB Vault using the same name as the previous version.
  5. If you are asked if you would like to replace the existing file, select “yes”.

We recommend using the following format to name your PDF Profile Summary:(Your Name) Medical Profile. For example (John Doe) Medical Profile.

What types of information should I put into my USB Vault?

  • The public section holds the PDF Profile Summary as previously discussed. The private section can hold just about anything else.
  • Complete medical records (X-rays, EKG, prescriptions, etc).
  • Personal documents (pictures, music, reminders, etc).

What is the difference between the Online Vault and USB Vault?

The Online Vault is included with your membership and designed to hold a few key files that are mostly non-medical in nature. The Online Vault also serves as a backup if your USB Vault is ever lost or stolen.

The USB Vault is optional ($19) and allows much larger files to be carried with you at all times. For example, EKG, CT scan, and stress test results could be on-hand for a your cardiologist.
